Dear ETHS community –
Today we are grieving the loss of a student, a friend, and member of the ETHS family, Dajae Coleman. Based on everything I have learned about this incredible young man, "Dae Dae," as he was called by friends, was the kind of person who knew what he wanted out of life and understood that the path to success involves plenty of hard work and dedication in the classroom and beyond. He was active in F.A.A.M. and the Evanston Pride Feeder Basketball program, and was on his way to becoming a member of the ETHS freshman basketball team.
We honored Dajae Coleman’s memory by sharing an essay that conveyed in his own words the excellent character of this wonderful human being. The essay is posted on the ETHS website. A brief statement about Dajae was read today over the high school’s PA system followed by a moment of silence.
Grief counselors were available to students yesterday and have been available throughout the school day today to support our students and staff as they mourn the loss of Dajae. Students are coping in different ways to this tragedy. After school today, we will determine what kind of support may be needed tomorrow.
The high school is setting up a memorial fund to accept donations on behalf of Dajae Coleman’s family to help defray funeral expenses and support the family during this difficult time. We will announce the specifics of this fund and ways to donate later this afternoon.
We continue to offer our sincere support to Dajae’s family and friends, and wish to thank the Evanston/Skokie community for their outpouring of concern and support for our students and staff.
