Coordination and Improvement of Curriculum
A strong educational program remains strong through ongoing examination, updating, and revision. Curricula change as a result of changes in state laws, graduation requirements, new academic standards adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education, and scholarship and developments in K-12 education. The improvement of curriculum includes:
- The development of new courses and revisions of existing courses and programs; these changes are adopted each fall and printed in the Program Planning Handbook.
- Coordination of curriculum and instruction with District 65, particularly with the middle schools
- Adoption and Deletion of textbooks and other instructional materials; textbooks are adopted annually as all texts are loaned to students and distributed to students and teachers through the Book Distribution Center
- Planning and conducting summer projects to develop curricula and provide professional development tied to the implementation of school goals.
- Leadership on school-wide change initiatives that cut across departments; for example, Literacy in the Content Areas and the effort to increase enrollment in Advanced Placement Courses.
- The Curriculum Forum, composed of parents, students, teachers from each department, and administrators, including a representative from District 65 reviews all course proposals, textbook adoptions, and proposals for summer work.
