Academic Intervention Team (Contact: Alicia Hart)

The purpose of the Academic Intervention Team is to support the academic achievement of targeted and recommended students. This intervention is for students who would likely benefit from regular support and guidance from an advisor in order to improve academic success.

The Academic Intervention Team supports a number of targeted groups:

  • Enriched Courses: Students in Sophomore Enriched classes will be provided support during an Academic Support Period scheduled three times per week running opposite the lab days of Biology classes. The academic support period is credit bearing and students will receive a mark of Pass or Fail. Parents of students enrolled are notified prior to the beginning of the school year and student participation is required.
  • Extracurricular Academic Program: The Extracurricular Academic Program (EAP) is a one-time opportunity for freshmen or sophomores with a grade point average between 1.7 and 1.99. This one-time opportunity is also available to juniors or seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0. This is a non-credit bearing support that helps students improve academically, in order to have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities offered at the school. Students in the program are required to meet with Dan Vosnos every Monday morning from 8:00 am – 8:45 am to monitor their individualized academic plan associated with their extracurricular eligibility status.
  • Counselor Recommended: Counselors can recommend students to work with an advisor from the Academic Intervention Team. Referred students must meet the following profile:
    a. Multiple D’s and F’s
    b. Not involved in a support program in the school (STAE, AVID, EXCEL)
    c. No/limited truancy issues
    d. 3rd and 4th year students (can include reclassified students)
  • Students in Transition: Students in transition provides support to students who have moved from Enriched to Regular Level classes. The team will support each student individually and develop success plans with each student to better ensure their success. Students will not earn a credit for meeting with the team member.
  • Social Worker Identified Students: The Academic Intervention Team supports students in need of academic, social and emotional support, as identified by the team social worker. Support will be provided during an Academic Support Period scheduled daily. The academic support period is credit bearing and students will receive a mark of Pass or Fail. The team social worker, Melissa Pollack, will serve as the social worker for the students in the support period. Parents of students enrolled are notified prior to the beginning of the school year and student participation is required.

Steps Toward Academic Excellence (STAE) (Contact: Marcus Campbell)

  • What: Targeted support for math and/or English at the honors level. Two-year program that includes a small STAE study hall led by a grade-level coordinator, special sessions devoted to study skills, and monitored academic progress. No credit is given for STAE, and it involves a mandatory pre-9th summer elective English course.

STAE is a study hall program for freshmen and sophomores who are capable of doing honors work but could use some regular academic support. Most students have the study hall 3 days a week, during a period that alternates with their science labs. A teacher confers with STAE students on a regular basis about their grades, about the supports available to them in the school, and about how they can best apply study skills. For students who struggle the most, the study hall teacher provides extra support and guidance. The goal of STAE is to help students achieve success in their honors classes.

100% of STAE students are enrolled in either honors math or honors English. Regular grade monitoring by teachers ensures that students are successful. When they are struggling, intervention occurs within the study hall.
