The John Benson Scholarship
We are proud to establish The John Benson Scholarship in honor of John Benson's 41-year teaching career, a career characterized by enthusiasm and passion for mathematics and education.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to one student majoring in mathematics with the intent to pursue either a career teaching math at any level, or a career in the eld of mathematics. John Benson is a legendary mathematics teacher who has inspired two generations of mathematics students. He is retiring in 2010. During his 41 years at ETHS, he has received many awards, including the Teacher Excellence Award from ETHS, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, and the T.E. Rine Secondary Mathematics Teaching Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Outside of the classroom, Benson has co-authored textbooks, given hundreds of presentations to teachers about teaching math, continuously participated in Project EXCITE, and founded the North Suburban Mathematics League. John Benson is a truly dedicated educator.
