ETHS Team Wins Regional WYSE Competition

A team of ETHS students won the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) regional competition on February 3, 2012. Headquartered at the University of Illinois, the WYSE Academic Challenge is a statewide competition that administers a series of tests in biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics, and English to high school teams and individuals. The ETHS team won all subjects, with the exception of math, and placed ahead of Niles West (2nd) and Loyola Academy (3rd).
Congratulations to the first place regional team members: Erik Baker, Elliot Chanen, Gabi Dallas, Eleanor Goerss, James Hanford, Sophie Kornbluh, Patrick Loftus, Josh Isenstein, Margaret Omori, Sam Sagan, Sammy Straus, Isabel Strula, Matt Swartwout, and Fiona West.
Individual medals went to the following students:
Biology: Sophie Kornbluh (1st place)
Chemistry: Gabi Dallas and Fiona West (tied for 2nd place)
Computer Science: Sammy Straus (2nd place)
English: Erik Baker (2nd place)
Physics: Sammy Straus (1st place); Sam Sagan (3rd place)
Best of luck to the team members as they move on to the March 9th sectional and vie for a spot at the 2012 state finals in April.
