Three students from Evanston Township High School were honored by the Kiwanis Club of Evanston in February 2017 for their community service efforts and academic achievements. Tim Brewer, Avery Gross and Abby Hanson received the Ted Van Zelst Award.
Brewer has been helping children with special needs since the seventh grade, working with groups such as Have Dreams and Best Buddies. He is also a member of the ETHS Lacrosse team.
Gross an ETHS Student Ambassador, serving new students and their families, and is involved with the school’s Emerge program. He is a McGaw YMCA Achiever and is also a member of the ETHS Restorative Justice program, working toward positive solutions with students.
Hanson spends 8-10 hours per week at the Evanston Animal Shelter. She counsels prospective “parents” for the animals, matching each animal to the lifestyle of their new owner. She is also a Student Ambassador at ETHS.
The Kiwanis Club recognizes outstanding scholars in athletics, fine arts, and community service throughout the school year. The Ted Van Zelst Award was named for a prominent Evanston businessman, entrepreneur and humanitarian. Awardees received a certificate of recognition, a book on leadership, and a gift card.
