Promotion Policy
In accordance with the Standards for Promotion adopted by ETHS in the 2006-2007 school year, students are be required to take a minimum of 6 classes each semester and earn a minimum of 12 credits a year for promotion to the next grade. Students who earn at least 12 credits each year, complete all graduation requirements, and earn at least the required 48 credits, will graduate with their class and receive an ETHS diploma. Under the new policy the number of credits earned will determine a student's grade level.
The District's primary goal is to improve student academic achievement and performance, particularly for students who are not yet meeting District standards. Therefore, we will inform students and parent/guardian of any academic deficiencies and offer resources for improving academic performance and option for earning needed credits toward graduation requirements. During the academic year counselors will be available to develop an academic plan that will meet the needs of students who are in danger of not graduating within four years.
Students are required to take 6 classes each semester and earn a minimum of 12 credits a year for promotion to the next grade.
- To be promoted to Sophomore status, students must have earned at least 12 credits by the end of the second semester in high school.
- To be promoted to Junior status, students must have earned a minimum of 24 credits by the end of the fourth semester in high school.
- To be promoted to Senior status, students must have earned a minimum of 36 credits at the end of the sixth semester in high school.
Students who earn at least 12 credits each year, complete all graduation requirements, and earn at least the required 48 credits will graduate with their class and receive an ETHS diploma.
Promotion decisions will be made only at the end of the school year, not at the end of the first semester. However, credits for 7th semester students not classified as seniors will be reviewed at the end of the 7th semester to determine possible promotion to senior status and eligibility for graduation.
Students who are not promoted will have only the rights and freedoms for their assigned grade. For example, a 3rd year student who is not promoted to junior status will not have free periods, will not be able to leave the building during lunch, and will not be able to frequent the Student Center. A 4th year student who is not promoted will not be able to participate in senior activities including senior assembly, senior voting, prom bids and graduation.
Information about graduation requirements and requirements for promotion will be in the Pilot and the Program Planning Handbook.
If you have questions about the Standards for Promotion, please feel free to contact your student's counselor or Associate Principal of Student Services.
