COVID Update: ETHS Takes Adaptive Pause Dec. 17-23, 2021

December 16, 2021

Dear Students & Parents/Guardians:

As previously mentioned, ETHS District 202 consults regularly with health authorities about COVID updates within our school community. Today, I made the decision, in consultation with the Evanston Health & Human Services Department, that ETHS will take an “Adaptive Pause” beginning tomorrow, December 17 and ending December 23. This means that all ETHS students will transition to e-learning during this period.

The Adaptive Pause is a short-term mitigation strategy that allows time for local health officials to gain a better understanding of the COVID situation impacting the school. At this time, ETHS and local health officials have identified core group outbreaks throughout the district.

The building will be open to students on Friday, December 17 during regular school hours (8:00am-3:35pm). During this time, students can pick up their Chromebooks, personal belongings, or other school supplies. WiFi Hotspots can be picked up during these hours in the ChromeZone (H220).

The adaptive pause at ETHS is intended to reduce the transmission of COVID while allowing students to continue instruction remotely with their teachers and during their regular schedules. During the adaptive pause, learning will be asynchronous on Friday, December 17. Learning will be synchronous Monday-Thursday, December 20-23. Students will follow the current block schedule December 20-22; as a reminder, Thursday, December 23 will have a “Wildkit Monday” schedule.

  • Synchronous learning means students complete assignments and class activities in real time, with students and instructors attending together from their different locations. Students should check their school email for e-learning activities such as forms, assignments and activities that will be used to take attendance, as well as individual updates from teachers regarding expectations for the day.
  • Attendance will be taken.

Canceled events and activities

As ETHS has already shared, non-essential activities and events are canceled for the remainder of this week and next week. This includes YAMO performances, Wildkit Academy, and Jazz Big Band Concert.

  • Field trips are also canceled.
  • Since the building will be closed, there will be no COVID testing at ETHS on December 21 and December 22, 2021.

504, SST, IEP, and other student meetings

Meetings will continue to be held during this adaptive pause via video conferencing platforms.  Please work with your child’s team to access the meeting.

Meal distribution/pick-up

Meals will not be distributed on Friday, December 17. Meals will be available December 20-23 for pick up from 9:00am - 12:00pm at Door #27.

Winter Break Reminder

ETHS and all District 202 offices will be closed for Winter Break December 24, 2021 – January 9, 2022.  All wings of the building except the Gym Wing will be closed to the public and non-essential staff beginning at 6:00am on December 24 through January 4. School and regular District 202 business operations will resume on Monday, January 10, 2022.

Looking ahead

With winter break upon us, it is critical that mitigation efforts continue in our community during the adaptive pause, during winter break, and when school resumes fully in-person on January 10. Please note that COVID testing will not be available at ETHS during the break, but it is readily available throughout Evanston. COVID testing will resume on Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

ETHS will continue to evaluate our response strategies on a daily basis in partnership with the Evanston Health Department through the entirety of the Adaptive Pause. We will share any updates as they become available, and in conformance with ISBE, IDPH, and the CDC guidelines.
