Dear Students and Families:

Tomorrow is Election Day. While we may not know the final presidential election results right away, the implications of this election will be top of mind for many, including our students. Students may have strong viewpoints and emotions about the election, regardless of the outcome. These emotions, opinions, and differences may bring up questions, concerns, and anxieties for our students. As we approach the week ahead, we are mindful of the weight students may carry into the classroom and to consider how election-related discussions might uniquely affect students from historically marginalized groups, who may experience this time differently.

As educators, we recognize our obligation to create an environment rooted in our culture of care–one that promotes constructive dialogue and supports all students as they navigate their feelings. The results of the election will surely present valuable learning opportunities, and we will approach them thoughtfully and appropriately—honoring all perspectives and experiences.

Here are a few considerations we have asked staff to consider for students as we continue to navigate this challenging year together:

• Be sensitive to the range of emotions students may experience: anger, fear, sadness, shock, happiness, pride, or satisfaction.

• Remind students to stay informed without overexposure to social media, especially if they’re feeling overwhelmed.

• Direct students to ongoing support resources available at school: Social Work Office (W121), Deans’ Office (H109), and more, as listed on our website.

While ETHS is and must remain a nonpartisan institution, we are not a values-free institution. ETHS honors the integrity and worth of every individual within our diverse community. In this moment, we are called to be more intentional and explicit about our values and our commitment to ensure all students feel seen, valued, and supported. And we will uphold that promise.
