Top bridge builders in the ETHS Straw Bridge Building and Breaking Contest were (from left): Charles Rogers, Mayerli Collantes Cook, and John Leibforth.
The Evanston Township High School Math Department held its 38th annual ETHS Straw Bridge Building and Breaking Contest in December 2017. The winner of this year’s competition is John Leibforth with a bridge that held 10.7 kilograms. Leibforth is a student in Andrew Segall’s class.
The bridge building contest allows students to apply the math and science lessons from their classes to a hands-on project. Students design and construct small straw bridges which are weighed, tested and scored by efficiency.
Other top bridge builders include:
- 2nd place: Mayerli Collantes Cook (10.6 kilograms; Maryjoy Heineman’s class)
- 3rd place: Charles Rogers (5.2 kilograms; Sara Moneypenny’s class)
- 4th place: Thomas Bahmandeji (4.8 kilograms; Jodi Alperstein’s class)
