Ceramic bowls are displayed at the 2022 ETHS Empty Bowl event.
The Evanston Township High School (ETHS) Community Service Club (CSC) hosted its annual Empty Bowl event on December 7 to support local soup kitchens and food pantries. Staff and students from the CSC, Fine Arts Department (ceramics), Human Resources Department, Operations Department, Student Activities Office, and Nutrition Services Department helped coordinate the event to raise awareness and funds to fight local hunger.
More than 400 people attended Empty Bowl 2022 and had the opportunity to purchase handmade ceramic bowls and eat a meal during ETHS lunch blocks. Around 200 ceramic pieces were donated by students and teachers. With the help from more than 80 student volunteers, this year’s Empty Bowl raised more than $2,500.
Many local businesses, organizations, and community members supported the event, including Backlot Coffee, Bagel Art, Evanston Art Center, Midwest Clay Guild, Bonnie Katz and Neal Stamell.
The spirit of giving back has been strong throughout the month of December at ETHS. In addition to Empty Bowl, CSC hosted its second annual Great Sock Showdown to support the Childcare Network of Evanston and Connections for the Homeless. More than 500 students on 17 different teams collected more than 700 socks.
And the ETHS Gift Drive wrapped up with more than 200 toys, winter gear items, and gifts along with 2,500 diapers donated to six local organizations. More than 185 students and staff donated gifts that were given to Bundled Blessings, Connections for the Homeless, Cradle2Career, Family Focus, RefugeeOne, and the YWCA.
