ETHS student advances to semifinal in physics olympiad program

Mar 1, 2019

Evanston Township High School junior Ronan Soni is among the top 400 scorers to advance to the semifinal round of the U.S. Physics Team Program. Sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the program is a test competition for high school students to represent the United States at the annual International Physics Olympiad Competition.

Landing a 19 out of 25, Soni exceeded the score needed to advance (16) and outscored the national average (9). Soni is the 28th student from ETHS to become a semifinalist and the first junior to make it to the round.

April 2019 results from the semifinal, known as the USA Physics Olympiad Exam, will be used to select 20 students to become official members of the U.S. Physics team. After completing a week of intense studying and testing in Maryland, five students will then be selected to represent the U.S. at the 50th International Physics Olympiad competition in July 2019.
