The ETHS Japan Bowl team took second place at the Illinois Japan Bowl competition in March 2019. The statewide academic tournament covers a variety of topics that test high school students on their knowledge and understanding of the Japanese language and culture.
Participants compete as a three-person team, based on the number of years they have studied Japanese. This year, ETHS seniors Trotter Alexander, Carlon Rosales, and Marisa Wernick represented the school.
Unlike other quiz bowls, students competing in the Japan Bowl hear the questions, instead of reading them, and have roughly 30 seconds to respond. Each question is asked in both Japanese and English and answered in a variety of ways. Winners of each state competition are then invited to compete at nationals in Washington D.C.
