Virtual FAN event with Laurence Steinberg on October 13

UPDATED October 12, 2020  2:40pm CT

Per Family Action Network: We are sad to report that Heidi Stevens is ill, and will not be able to serve as an interviewer for tomorrow night’s event with Larry Steinberg. She has asked her podcast co-host, John Duffy, Psy.D., to fill in for her. Many of you will recall that Dr. Duffy spoke for FAN this past winter at North Shore Country Day in conjunction with his new book, Parenting the New Teen in the Age of Anxiety. Dr. Duffy has extensive media experience, so we anticipate this to be a smooth transition, with great value to the audience.

We are updating our website, Zoom registration page, and social media platforms to reflect this change.

-----

“College During COVID: Lessons from the Science of Adolescence,” a Family Action Network (FAN) conversation with Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D. will be hosted on Tuesday, October 23, beginning at 7:00pm via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public, suitable for ages 12 and up. Registration is required.

Colleges and universities across the country have struggled to decide whether to keep campuses open, offer online instruction exclusively, or institute some combination of the two. For this webinar, FAN has invited back Dr. Steinberg, Distinguished University Professor and the Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple University, to discuss how our understanding of adolescent development can and should inform this difficult decision. He presented two excellent talks for FAN in 2014 in conjunction with the release of his bestselling book “Age of Opportunity: Lessons from the new Science of Adolescence.”

Dr. Steinberg is one of the world's leading experts on adolescence. He is the author of nearly 500 articles and essays on development during the teenage years, and the author, co-author, or editor of 17 books.

Dr. Steinberg will offer an overview of his research into the risk-taking behaviors of young adults, their capacity for self-control.

The October 13 webinar is sponsored by Family Action Network (FAN), in partnership with Evanston Township High School D202, Compass Health Center, Family Institute at Northwestern University, Family Service Center, Family Service of Glencoe, Glencoe D35, Haven Youth and Family Services, Loyola Academy, New Trier Parents’ Association, Northwestern University School of Education and Social Policy, Roycemore School, St. Athanasius School PTO, Stevenson High School D125, The Alliance for Early Childhood, and Wolcott College Prep.

The event will be recorded and available later on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. A bonus after-hours event is also available to webinar attendees. For more information, visit www.familyactionnetwork.net.
