State of Illinois Switches Graduation Requirement from SAT to ACT

June 18, 2024

Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, ETHS juniors must take the state-sponsored ACT to graduate. They will no longer be required to take the SAT exam. Juniors will also take the PSAT/NMSQT on Wildkit Futures Day in October. In addition, instead of the PSAT8/9 and PSAT 10, students in grades 9 and 10 will take assessments provided by ACT Inc. These changes were recently made at the state level for all Illinois high schools.

About the ACT

The ACT is used to meet federal accountability requirements for high schools. It is also a college admission test. Like the SAT, the ACT is among the criteria that colleges may use in making admissions decisions and determining scholarship eligibility. The test includes four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, science, plus a writing test.
