ETHS History and Social Sciences teacher Corey Winchester was selected by Teach Plus as one of 20 educators to serve as Fellows of its Illinois Policy Fellowship 2018-19 cohort. Teach Plus is a national nonprofit that empowers teachers to lead improvements in policy and practice. “I’d love to see critical student leadership development at the forefront of educator advocacy, as it is our responsibility to push for systemic and institutional change,” stated Winchester.
Teachers are selected from across the state for this nine-month program that facilitates advocacy for policies that support equity, access, and excellence for all Illinois students. During the 2018-19 academic year, Teach Plus fellows will work on issues such as school discipline, teacher preparation, the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and recruitment and retention of teachers of color.
