On December 6, the Evanston Township High School Math Department held its 40th annual ETHS Bridge Building and Breaking Contest. The winner of this year’s competition is
Annika Gylling with a bridge that held 6.0 kilograms. Gylling is a student in Kayla Goldenberg’s class.

The bridge-building contest allows students to apply the math and science lessons from their classes to a hands-on project. Students design and construct small straw bridges that are weighed, tested and scored by efficiency.

Other top bridge builders include:

  • 2nd place: Liza Imrem (5.7 kilograms; Maryjoy Heineman and Matthew Kaiser’s class)
  • 3rd place: Isaiah Thompson (5.5 kilograms; Avani Khandhar’s class)
  • 4th place: Violet Weston (4.8 kilograms; Kenzo Furukawa’s class)
