  • The course request process begins in January of each school year. Please read the following information to learn more about the course request process and important dates.

    Course Request and Planning Resources

The online Course Selection Guide is a searchable catalog of courses available at ETHS. The online guide contains course descriptions for the regular school year, as well as course descriptions and workshops for Summer School. Course information for the upcoming school year and upcoming Summer School year is released around Winter Break.

Other features of the online Course Selection Guide include the ability to search courses by grade level, department, course length, and other categories such as Advanced Placement or dual credit courses. To view course listings in a language other than English, use the "Select Language" drop down menu in the upper left hand corner of this website.

The PDF version of the online Course Selection Guide provides a complete, printable document of the courses and course levels available at ETHS.

  • January

Course Selection Nights (Grade 8 - Incoming Freshmen). In mid-January, incoming freshman students attend Course Selection Night to learn more about electives, summer school options, and course requirements. Counselors provide an overview of the course request process, and incoming students make their course requests for freshman year using an online form. Prior to this event, students should discuss their course requests with a parent/guardian and mark these selections on the Course Request Worksheet for Incoming Freshmen. Course requests will be entered online at Course Selection Night. For more information visit the Course Selection Night page.

Summer School Course Registration. Starting mid-January, registration for Summer School is open to all students. Visit the Summer School section of the website for details about Summer School deadlines and registration process.

Placement Meetings. Placement decisions for incoming freshmen are based on the results of the MAP test, recommendations from eighth grade teachers, grades or measures of academic progress, and current course enrollment. During the first week in February, the ETHS placement team meets with middle school representatives to discuss student academic course placement in Humanities, Biology, Math, and World Languages (if necessary). Academic support programs eligibility is also discussed at this time. All final academic course placements are determined by ETHS and will be communicated directly to families in March, along with confirmation of electives requested via the ETHS Freshman Course Request form submitted in January at Course Selection Night. Visit the Course Placement section of the website for details about the course placement and testing process.

Counselor Educational Planning Sessions. The first week after Winter Break, counselors host educational planning sessions with their current students in grades 9-11 to review the course request process and to review graduation requirements, college admissions requirements, course offerings, and procedures for making course requests. Course request information and Course Request Worksheets are shared with students during these sessions.

Course Recommendations. During the first week after Winter Break, students will receive course/level recommendations. Teachers make course and level recommendations for the upcoming school year based on a student’s current placement and performance. In addition, elective courses may be recommended by teachers based on conversations with students.
