School Closing Notification
If a delayed start, early dismissal, activity cancellation, or school closure is necessary ETHS will issue a schoolwide email and voice message alert from the automated notification system and will post a notice on the ETHS website (www.eths.k12.il.us) and social media pages. School closings including unplanned late start days and early dismissals are reported on radio station WBBM-AM (780), on morning television programs, and online at www.emergencyclosings.com. Unless an alert is issued, ETHS will be open and operate on a normal school day schedule. If ETHS has a late start day or dismisses early due to inclement weather or other emergencies, before-school and after-school functions may be canceled. Isolated activity cancellations will be handled more personally on a smaller scale as required by the situation.
If school is in session on days when severe weather is predicted, students and staff are urged to allow extra time in the morning to get to school safely. Whether walking to school, taking the bus, driving, or being dropped off at school in a vehicle, students and staff are encouraged to take extra precautions to stay warm by wearing additional layers and protective outerwear. Parents are encouraged to make decisions about their child's attendance at school based on current weather conditions and safe transportation to and from school. All ETHS employees are expected to make a reasonable effort to report to work as scheduled.
Reporting to Work During School Closures and Late Start Days
If a school closure is issued, all 12-month safety staff, exempt safety staff, custodians, engineers, and grounds people should report to work as scheduled. All other ETHS employees should stay home.
If a late start day is issued, all 12-month safety staff, exempt safety staff, custodians, engineers, and grounds people should report to work as scheduled. Administrators and department chairs should report to work at 8:00am. All remaining ETHS employees should report to work by 9:30am to allow for a 9:40am opening of school. If weather or other emergency situations prevent an employee from reporting to work on a late start day, the employee is expected to follow the normal call-in procedures as determined by Human Resources and the employee’s direct supervisor. Individuals who call off due to weather conditions when ETHS is open must use a personal day.
The ETHS website homepage is the best source of information during a weather-related closing or an emergency. If school will be cancelled, or if a delayed start or before- and/or after-school activities cancellation is necessary, a news alert will be posted on the ETHS home page. Details also will be shared on the school’s Facebook and Twitter pages and through the ETHS mobile app push notification system.
Local TV news and radio stations are another source of information about delayed starts, school closings, and emergency information. ETHS will report delayed starts, before- and/or after-school activities cancellation, and school closures to the Emergency Closing Center. In addition, the Emergency Closing Center has established a public website at www.emergencyclosingcenter.com where you can check if Evanston Township High School has closed.
How to Update Your Contact Information
Evanston Township High School uses the SchoolMessenger notification system to inform ETHS families and staff of certain school-wide events, school closings, and crisis situations. These notifications are sent to phone numbers and email addresses that you provide to ETHS and should be updated regularly as your contact information changes.
